Byte app updates (ongoing)

hello! we’re going to use this thread going forward to keep you posted on what will be in the next version of byte — for this upcoming release and subsequent versions

before we launched we used to use regular bulletins for this, but the truth is we don’t always have something meaningful to share every 2-3 weeks, so we’ll reserve bulletins for when they make sense in the future and instead use this thread for app updates

there is currently an app update in review for iOS and android:

  • various bug fixes and improvements following the channels update
  • if one of your posts is moderated inside a channel, a notification will show up inside the notifications tab and you’ll receive a push
  • added an option that allows you to permanently delete your account (we previously did this manually, upon request)

we’ll reply to this thread when the update is approved and share details about the next one

the update mentioned above was approved and is being pushed out to the stores. should be available in a few hours

the next version of byte will contain these updates:

  • adds a bell icon to profiles that allows you to subscribe to people and get notifications when they make new posts
  • adds a button that allows you to hide posts you don’t like
  • adds a walkthrough that introduces channels for new users and people who aren’t following channels

we’re going to start keeping track of updates on our what’s new page, since we can link to it easily from within the app. here it is: https://byte.co/whats-next

i’ll respond to this thread any time we update it

the new updates are roughly in the order we’re releasing them. several of these features were on our existing roadmap, including sound/remixing. a few were moved around higher on the list based on poll responses

the remix/sound feature will be optional (you will be allowed to disable remixes on your post if you like)

we are rethinking the not interested button to make sure it can’t be abused which is why you don’t see it here

we are also rethinking channels, as mentioned in the other thread, since they weren’t working out as intended

we’re releasing a new version for iOS and android soon. one big thing you’ll notice is that we’re testing a new post layout. it looks roughly like this (still a few bugs in this screenshot):

the buttons have been pulled to the side, made larger, and the share button has been clearly labeled. we’ve also pulled profile color into an outline around your profile picture and moved the channel label. also, the video has been made fullscreen.

obviously with the buttons on the side there are some broad similarities to the tiktok post object, but i want to be clear that we actually ended up here independently (after designing over 20 options) because what we’ve found is that moving the buttons to the side in general covers less of the “important” area of a video, especially on smaller devices

as i mentioned earlier, we’re running this as a test. it will go out to 50% of people on byte and the existing layout will go out to the other 50%. once the test is running we’ll be looking at both versions side by side and seeing which, if any, encourages more liking, commenting, sharing, or other type of engagement.

on the android front, you’ll also see some massive loading improvements that mean videos load way faster. these changes will come to iOS as well, but because the implementations are a bit different android will actually get this one a little bit earlier

next up, we’ll be looking at a combination of expression features and connection features. one small one that we can commit to is trimming and one large one is direct messaging

thank you for your continued support and feedback and we’ll share more soon
